Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and Counseling provide a confidential setting in which emotional difficulties can be explored. This process requires regular meetings and a commitment from both the patient and the therapist.

Psychotherapy's main goal is to reduce symptoms that a person might feel. These symptoms include anxiety, sadness, difficulties communicating at home, work or with friends. A person may also feel incapable of regulating his emotions, have many somatic preoccupations and lack energy and organization to complete daily tasks.

A person may seek psychotherapy if he/she has:

  • Relationship issues - separation, divorce, sexual problems, intimacy issues, communication difficulties.
  • Academic / Vocational / Employment issues.
  • Difficulties adjusting to a medical condition.
  • Emotional issues - Depression, anxiety, fears, stress, panic, low self esteem.
  • Substance Abuse issues - or if one has a family member who is an addict.
  • Adjustment issues.
  • Burn out and stress related to work.
  • Sexual Identity issues.
  • Sleeping disorders.
  • Difficulties and nervousness with socialization issues.

Psychotherapy is a process where one understands himself through intense discussions, dream analysis and involves a new understanding of the environment (family and society) that he was raised in.

Through psychotherapy a person becomes aware of his capacity for learning to live in harmony with others and with society. As this innate potential for social connectedness becomes conscious a feeling of genuine security emerges rooted in a deep sense of belonging. The main criterion for mental health is a feeling of human connectedness and a willingness to develop oneself fully and contribute to the welfare of others.

Choosing a psychotherapist is a very important issue. It is important to check the credentials and experience of the person you are about to see, and to make sure that "chemistry" between the two of you exists. The relationship that you will develop with your therapist is crucial to the treatment outcome and relief of your symptomatology.

Psychotherapy can take few sessions or few years depending on what kind of problem you are faced with and what decision you and your therapist will make. This decision is usually made in the first sessions of therapy in the development phase of treatment planning. If the focus of treatment is a specific problem, psychotherapy will take fewer sessions than when the treatment request has to do with personal growth.

Couples Therapy

If you are troubled with relationship issues, married or not, it is a good idea to consider discussing your thoughts with a professional licensed relationship therapist because your personal situation is affecting your happiness more than anything else.  All life aspects can be handled a bit easier if you have peace at home.

Relationship or marriage counseling can teach you effective ways of communicating, understand yourself and your partner better and ultimately it can help you decide whether or not to stay in your relationship. Couples come into counseling with a variety of issues to address including communication & conflict resolution, sexual & intimacy issues, fighting and anger problems, identity and role conflict, dependence vs. independence, religion, ethics and values, jealousy, parenting, infidelity, money and finances, addiction, family and in-law struggles, step family issues, gender roles, infertility / adoption, and many more.  Relationships deteriorate gradually. If you experience the following signs, your relationship  is in trouble. The early signs are:

  • Inability to communicate, feeling misunderstood
  • Diminished sexual desire
  • Fighting almost over every little issue
  • Inability and lack of desire to make plans
  • Experiencing sadness, anger, despair
  • Having an affair

Couples counseling can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds. If you are at the point where you consider separation, if you feel sad, or angry, or fear, or resentment, if you do not know how to handle your relationship, it is important to seek professional help so that can decide which way to go.

My belief is that both partners need to understand their needs and evaluate what is keeping them in the relationship. Sometimes, as the years go by, both or one partner becomes too close to the other, or to the children and loose parts of themselves. The relationship is blamed, or the partner is blamed without taking personal responsibility of how the relationship has evolved. If you come in to therapy early, when the problems begin to arise, you have more chances in saving your marriage/relationship. I also believe that intimacy is a key issue in a relationship which is often not dealt with.

Couples therapy can be short term. You may need only a few sessions to help you weather a crisis. Or you may need couples therapy for several months, particularly if your relationship has greatly deteriorated. As with individual psychotherapy, you typically see a marriage counselor once a week.

It may be time for couples therapy or marriage counseling. Couples therapy can help you rebuild your relationship. Or decide that you'll both be better off if you separate. Either way, couples therapy can help you understand your relationship better and make well-thought-out decisions.
